Wedding and documentary photographer in Berlin

International wedding photographer Tilman VoglerHi, I am Tilman. I am interested in humans and their stories, regions and history. I want to look behind the obvious. Photography is my medium to tell stories.

I was born at the end of the 80s in Solingen, a town in western Germany, finished my high school there and then lived on different continents for four years while studying political science by correspondence. Berlin has been my base for the last eight years.

Openness is the highest principle in my work. Openness towards different ways of life, opinions, wishes. I am always close to people, but never intrusive. I try to move away from cliche-ridden motives (by no means do I detest them though) and towards interesting perspectives that allow the viewer an insight into and a form of emotional understanding of a situation.

A few of my passions: meeting people, being on the road, tell stories, languages, bike travels, hitch-hiking, writing, friends, music, gardening (read more about that on the BBC) and good food.

Medium-term adventures that I’m keen on: live and work on a farm / winery, travel across the ocean on a cargo ship, visit Russia, Iran and Pakistan, hitch-hike across the US, live in Nicaragua again, write a book.

What inspires me: generally all humans who do things differently than what is usually expected and question social conventions. Photographic inspirations: August Sander, Robert Frank, Thomas Hoepker, Martin Paar, Brandon Stanton, Elfie Semotan.

Other facts about me:

I never leave the house without a camera because I have a sort of urge to document life as it happens.

For my personal work I work almost exclusively analogue. I also offer workshops at Stattlab, a community-run photo-lab that I helped setup.

I speak English, Spanish, French and basic Italian.

Adjectives, that describe me well: curious, life affirming, fond of children (and sometimes childish.)

Old Berlin backyards and “corner pubs”, small sleepy villages and vast landscapes make me happy.

Aside from weddings you can find many personal projects and stories on my blog.

“I write in both our names and want to say: THANK YOU! So much! You really kept what you promised. You captured so many warm and funny moments and managed to see everything that means something to us. Thank you!”

Sina + Andi (Garden wedding in Berlin Neukölln)

“We are speechless. You bring our day back in all its beautiful facets. This is exactly how we wished for our day to be captured. Thank you!

Gesa + Fabian

“We booked Tilman for our small wedding celebration in Berlin und we’re very happy to have picked him – a perfect choice. We met him before our wedding and explained our wishes – he fulfilled them all. The photos turned out gorgeous and show all the beautiful moments from our special day in a natural way. He is a likeable photographer who works unobtrusively and takes great photos of a wedding celebration also from the background. All our guests were super happy with him and are equally enthused about the photos as we are. We highly recommend Tilman.”

Lien + Moritz (Wedding on “Peacock Island” in Berlin)

“My husband and I hired Tilman as our wedding photographer. The collaboration was perfect from the beginning. In the run-up to our wedding we spoke to him about our wishes. Tilman fulfilled them all and remembered even the smallest details – great! He was present during our entire day but always in the background and hardly noticeable. He managed to capture beautiful, spontaneous photos. Tilman is a delightful guy and his photos are superb. We would hire him again anytime.”
